Painting/Drawing Workshop

with Bristol Artist Nick Moore

14th-15th October 2017 (Saturday/Sunday 10am-4pm)

I have been forty years discovering that the queen of all colours is black.

Renoir

Some say that black is not a colour, that it draws everything into itself – it is equated with darkness, death and depth, with shadow and oblivion.
In this two day workshop we will explore the richness and versatility of this potent colour.

Investigating the qualities of black, we will engage in a variety of mark making techniques and materials, with structured exercises and time for individual development of work. Practical explorations will be interspersed with discussion of the cultural and historical context of black, looking at examples from visual art, the written word, science and belief systems.

Nick has been immersed in an enquiry into black as a colour for the last ten years. Two previous series of paintings, ‘Dark Intervals’ and ‘DarkLight’ have been an exploration of black as an energy, working against the stereotypical cast of the colour as depressive or as an endgame; as Matisse said, ‘Black is a force’.

No previous artistic experience is required.

Cost: £120 (£100 conc.) all materials included.

To reserve a place, a non-returnable deposit of £30 is required by 6th October 2017.

Feeling, Understanding and Creating Colour Relationships

Art & Science Workshop

18th-19th November 2017 (Sat 10am-6pm / Sunday 10am-1pm)

There is a wonderful world of colour that surrounds us in Nature. There is a profound world of colour deep within each one of us that longs to be expressed through art. What is the relationship between them? Can a deeper awareness of the language of colour perceived through Nature strengthen our own expressive use of colour in art?

This workshop will offer guidance in how to use aspects of Goethe’s Colour Theory (which inspired William Turner, among other painters) to attune us to how colour is revealed through natural phenomena. We can discover how light and darkness co-create the magical play and distinctive ordering of colour in the atmosphere at different times of day and in the arising of the rainbow. This awareness can enhance our confidence in how to choose colour relationships in our own creation of art.

No previous artistic experience is required.

Cost: £120 (£100 conc.) all materials included.

To reserve a place, a non-returnable deposit of £30 is required by 10th November 2017.

A Midwinter Colour Journey

Painting Workshop

with Tom Burns

8th-9th December 2017 (Fri 7-9pm / Saturday 10am-6pm)

This workshop has been inspired by the previous summer’s weekly theme-based group on “A Garden in the Soul”. We can use the metaphors of a “soul garden” and “the gardener in the soul” as one way of observing all the manifold inner experiences we encounter in daily life and consequently of how we tend, nurture and cultivate these inner responses to life. To extend these metaphors a little further, we can ask ourselves – what might happen in Midwinter in such a “soul garden”?
We will explore this theme in an accessible, playful way through a variety of media.

No previous artistic experience is required.

Cost: £95 (£85 conc.) all materials included.

To reserve a place, a non-returnable deposit of £30 is required by 1st Dec 2017.
