Painting/Drawing Workshop

with Bristol artist, musician and writer Nick Moore

7th-8th July 2018

(Saturday/Sunday 10am-4pm)

‘Painting is matter rather than form. It is matter in the same way as the world is matter.’

Limbour on Dubuffet, ICA exhibition cat. 1955

A two day workshop exploring ways of animating the surface of a painting with homemade pastes, textural interventions and found materials based on acrylics. The techniques can be used to build both abstract and figurative/landscape images.

Nick has been immersed in the exploration of painted surface texture over the last 10 years, culminating in his latest series of canvases, Material Shift, shown last year at Ruskin Mill.

No previous artistic experience is required.

Cost: £120 (£100 conc.)  all materials included.

To reserve a place, please send a £30 deposit, together with your booking form, by 29th June 2018.

Painting/Drawing Workshop

with Bristol artist, musician and writer Nick Moore

date tbc (Saturday/Sunday 10am-4pm)

Who has not known those miraculous moments – veritable feast days of the brain – when the senses are keener and the sensations more ringing, when the firmament of a more transparent blue plunges headlong into an abyss more infinite, when sounds chime like music, when colours speak, and scents tell of whole worlds of ideas?

Baudelaire

In this workshop we will explore the connection of painting and music, or more accurately, sound, using examples of the relationships between visual artists (who were often also musicians) and composers, such as Kandinsky/ Schoenberg; Rauschenberg/Cage, we will explore what informs and inspires both practices: also the use of ‘nonmusical’ or graphic scores and the common use of certain descriptive terms such as rhythm and tone; we will look at such phenomena as Synesthesia, where sound evokes colour or shape and vice versa.

Practical explorations will be interspersed with discussion, structured exercises and time for individual development of work. There will be an illustrated talk as part of the enquiry.

No need to have any musical knowledge or be a musician to participate!

No previous artistic experience is required.

Cost: £120 (£100 conc.) all materials included.

To reserve a place, a non-returnable deposit of £30.
